Home Content Insurance

Home content insurance, also known as home insurance, and homeowners insurance sometimes abbreviated as HOI, is a vital part of making sure your property is protected from any kind of accident that may destroy your property. You have all these valuable items in your home and you certainly do not want anything to happen to these contents and have no means to replace them. This is where home content insurance is going to come in and help out. Home content insurance will help you protect everything from your T.V. to the motor in your washing machine. If one of these should break down you will have the insurance to help you in replacing or repairing the item. This will save you a lot of money in my own opinion in the long run.

You will be asked to fill out a form breaking down all the contents of you home so the agent will know what to base the policy on. A lot of policies may contain a threshold to the amount you are able to list and may require you add insurance for an individual item if it exceeds this threshold. A great way to document the contents of your home is to video tape each room and list what is in each room on the video. Be sure to keep this video in a safe place I recommend a safety deposit box outside of the house at say a bank. If this is not possible then be sure that you keep it in a fire proof box at your house.

Premiums for home content insurance policies can vary like all other policies, based on risk. If you live in a area that has a crime rate you can expect it to be hard to find someone to insure you and if they do you will pay a very high premium for the policy. The opposite is true as well if you live in a neighborhood that has a very low crime rate then you will not have as hard of a time finding an agent to approve you and your premium will on average be lower.

You will have to renew your insurance policy normally on a yearly basis and you want to be sure to readjust the value of your old content as well as anything you may have recently purchased. Some of your items may have depreciated in value while some may have appreciated in value. If you fail to do this you will be stuck with the prices that are outdated and you may not get what your property is actually worth. You can be sure the insurance agency is not going to help you or remind you to do this. If they get to pay out for something that has increased in value, but you did not claim it as appreciated then guess what they will pay the old price. The same holds true for things that depreciated in value. If they think it is worth less then you can be sure they will end up paying you less. So just be sure to do your due diligence and protect yourself by keeping an updated list of your contents.

One of the biggest things you have to decide is “do i need home content insurance” the answer for me is yes. I knew a couple that did not have any sort of home content insurance and unfortunately had a fire break out in their house and it burnt everything they owned to the ground. They had to build back up from the very bottom. They did not even have underwear to wear. If they had home and contents insurance they would have been fine. Eventually they did build back up however it took a long time, and it would not have taken this long had they had home content insurance. In my mind I can justify the cost of home content insurance if it means I do not have to worry when a fire breaks out or a dishwasher breaks down. It doesn’t hurt to go get a contents insurance quote, even if you feel it isn’t that cheap house insurance can save you a huge headache. So be sure not to be cheap contents insurance is something you should greatly consider.
